Determining a Winning Hand

Although there are many varieties to the game of poker, the rules of determining a winning hand remain pretty much the same. Players can get together and determine variations of these rules, but most follow these common ones which are listed in the order of lowest to highest in value:

Pair: One pair of two cards of an equal value. In case of a tie with another player who also has two pair, the player with the highest pair wins. If both hands have the same face value then the pot is split.

Two Pairs: Two sets of two cards where each set has an equal value. In case of a tie with another player who also has two pair, the player with the highest pair wins. If both hands have the same face value then the pot is split.

Three of a Kind: Any three cards of the same value. In case of a tie, the highest set of three cards wins. The two hands cannot be equal since it would require six cards of the same value.

Straight: Five cards in sequence, but not of the same suit. In case of a tie, the straight with the highest face value wins. If both hands have the same face value then the pot is split.

Flush: Any five cards of the same suit but not in consecutive sequence. The high card determines the winner in the case of a tie. If both high cards are the same then the pot is split.

Full House: Three of a kind combined with a pair of another kind. A tie is determined by the value of the three of a kind. Just as with three of a kind, there are no ties in a full house.

Four of a Kind All 4 cards of the same face value. In a tie, the 4 cards with the highest face value wins. If two Four of a Kind hands occur, they are guaranteed to have different face values.

Straight Flush: Any five card sequence (straight) where all 5 cards are of the same suit. In case of a tie, the hand with the highest end card wins.

Royal Flush A Straight Flush that contains the cards from 10 to Ace. This is the highest possible hand in Poker. (Technically it is treated as a normal Straight Flush, but has the highest theoretical face value.) In case of a tie, the pot is split.

High Cards: In the case that no player has any of the above hands, the winner is determined by looking at who has the card with the highest ranking face value. If two High Cards have the same value, next highest cards are compared and so on until a winner is determined. In case of a tie, the pot is split.
